This carpet is knotted by Qashqai nomads from Iran. Qashqai carpets have been said to be “probably the most famous of all Persian tribal weavings”.
Wool is a natural textile fibre and one of the most sought-after materials for rug making. Wool rugs are highly durable and perfectly capable of resisting wear and tear of everyday use.
The Ghashghai or Qashqai nomads are found in the Fars province in the southwest of Iran and they live in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and Southern Isfahan but mostly in the surroundings of Shiraz. They move twice a year, between the winter pastures near the Persian Gulf and the summer pastures up in the Zagros mountains where it is much cooler.
The Qashqai are renowned for their pile carpets and other woven wool products. They are sometimes referred to as “Shiraz” because Shiraz was the major marketplace for them in the past. The wool produced in the mountains and valleys near Shiraz is exceptionally soft and beautiful and takes a deeper colour than wool from other parts of Iran.
